Stop the world, its getting mad

Daily newspapers are giving us accounts of what it is like to live in so-called Christian countries: rape, abuse, marital discord, theft, murder, white collar crime, et cetera. Why is it that some countries still display a civilized society, while especially in the Western world it seem as if society is going haywire?

We are talking about countries who were originally established under the lordship of Jesus Christ, as Christian, who based their constitution on the Bible, and who considered morality a virtue. But because of the insistence of atheists and humanists (who believe they are giving the world the ‘real heaven’), the lies of false theologians, and the absurd teaching of evolution (man is an animal with no intrinsic value), we now experience a multitude of moral problems: schools have to be guarded against murderous students, discipline is unheard of, households are fragmented, infidelity is common, sexual diseases are on the increase, et cetera.

The Bible has the answer: society is controlled by the prince of this world, the devil (Ephesians 2:2; 1 John 5:19b). Because of the faith of believers, God keeps the devil’s hand in check; he does not have a free reign (Job 1:9) - God puts a hedge around those who fear Him. This means that common grace keeps a Christian society in control.
But, Bible history gives us an example of what happens when a nations turns against God. When the Israelites failed to obey God, He told them that from then on they would have to contend with their enemies, since their gods would be a snare to them (Judges 2:3). For us the gods of the enemy is love of money, murder, licentiousness, et cetera and they will be part of our society, and will try to entrap us. The result is mayhem and no amount of public speaking or organizing committees will alleviate it. It is a spiritual problem: we are not animals, because we have souls, and whatever we say, we are still accountable to God.

This scenario is also described in 2 Chronicles 15:1-7: the prophets told king Asa to keep on seeking God (in practical terms it means living by God’s standards) and then the nation would be successful. Interesting words in the passage are: “in those days it was not safe to travel about, for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil. One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another, because God was troubling them with every kind of distress” (verse 6-7). Isn’t this exactly what we are experiencing?

The lesson: the so called ‘Utopia’ of the atheists and humanists were shown to us in the countries where Stalin, Mao, Pot Pol, and others ruled. It is no ‘Utopia’, but a dream, in which some are very rich and many are extremely disadvantaged, and society continues deteriorating. Christians should not be so timid and cowed by people with feeble arguments against them. God’s system is clear, logical and precise: a society at peace with Him will be a society at peace with each other. Overflowing prisons are not a sign of peace with God, and as always, though nations rage and conspire to get God and his Son, Jesus Christ, out of society, we pay the price, and we will eventually pay it in full before the judgement throne of God, unless we bow our knees before the most wonderful Leader the world has ever known and will ever know, Jesus Christ.
