Can an unbeliever understand the Bible?

Atheists, evolutionists, skeptics, and others, give a plethora of reasons why the Bible is wrong. They either quote it incorrectly, or use passages out of context. With that they demonstrate that they do not understand the Bible. For example, some will say that God approves slavery and polygamy, condones ethnic cleansing, or wants parents to kill disobedient children.
The Bible provides the answer to this phenomenon. In 1 Corinthians 2:9-14 we read:
‘No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love Him.’
(That means that it is impossible to detect God’s plan for man by our natural senses.)
‘But God has revealed it to us by His Spirit.’ How has He revealed His plans to us by His Holy Spirit? Verse 10b and 11 explain that just as nobody knows what goes on in another man’s heart and mind, no one can read God’s mind to know what His plans are. God revealed His thoughts to the Holy Spirit. Only the Spirit knows the will and mind of God. (It is logical, because the Spirit is part of the Trinity.) The way God made known His plan is through the Holy Spirit who inspired the chosen prophets and apostles to write down God’s words, which were then compiled into a library, the Bible.
This is where the difference between a Spirit-filled believer and a critic of God, comes in. Only people who have the Holy Spirit can understand the Bible, since it has a spiritual nature (by spiritual we should understand that it has to do with the invisible realm). All unbelievers, and liberal theologians who reject the Scriptures, do not have the Spirit, and cannot correctly understand it. This is the origin of all the spurious, false, inaccurate and forced exegesis of Scripture. Unless a man has been born from above, and filled with the Spirit (John 3:3,5), he cannot understand the Scriptures.
Next time you hear or read that God is stupid; Jesus is ridiculous; salvation is impossible; and the idea of the Spirit is outrageous, understand this well: they have no idea what they are talking about. Just take care that you know your Bible so you will not be taken captive by lies and lose your salvation.
