The Bible and the Dawkins Delusion.

The following quote is from the book ‘The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins: “Dan Brown’s novel ‘The Da Vinci Code’, and the film made from it, are arousing huge controversy in church circles. Christians are encouraged to boycott the film and picket cinemas that show it. It is indeed fabricated from start to finish: invented, made-up fiction. In that respect, it is exactly like the gospels. The only difference between ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and the gospels is that the gospels are ancient fiction while ‘The Da Vinci Code’ is modern fiction.”

It is indeed strange that ‘the ancient fiction of the gospels” have changed the lives of millions of people over the last 2000 years. It has caused thousands of churches to be established all over the world. Dan Brown probably made millions of pounds with his book and film, but it is debatable who will know about his book in 50 years time or even worse in 2000 years time.

It is also debatable how much love and hate ‘The Da Vinci Code’ will generate in thousands of years. The gospels have the distinction that millions of people have followed their main Character through the ages. Many commentaries, songs, poems and other books have been written to glorify Jesus Christ. Will Dan accomplish the same? In the same vein millions have hated the Gospels and have written many books through the ages to debunk the message of the Gospels.

But Richard Dawkins, beside proving the fact that an unbeliever’s mind has been blinded so that he cannot understand the Gospel (2 Cor 4:4), is actually reprimanding the church, and he is right in his complaints about believers: writing abusive letters, picketing, and other actions.

We must remember: God always had an enemy who opposed Him and who attacked the Bible, the Word of God. So believers who get in a frenzy about it, are wrong. God has been in the business for millions of years, and is not worried about it. He is more worried about the people attacking Him, because regardless of what they say, He still wants all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Tim 2:4). Believers know, or should know, that our fight is not against people, it is against the devil (Eph 6:12). So why should they malign atheists, shoot doctors who abort embrios, or picket at theaters? “Pray!”, is God’s command. Many books and films and other anti-God, anti-Bible propaganda will yet be produced. We can actually expect an increase in anti-God-of-the-Bible activities. It is just a proof of the reality and seriousness of the message of the Bible.

Atheists and other unbelievers have a free will and therefore the right to heap abuse on God, the Bible and believers. Believers have no command from Jesus to retaliate. One thing is clear: many believers do not know their Bibles. So learn a lesson from people like Richard Dawkins, and get to know the Bible and have the right attitude of love even if they are as abusive as they possibly can be. God is in command of the situation and He is the Judge, not the believers.
