God designed humans for health

The standard interpretation of evolution is that human beings are descendants from the ape family. What happened in this evolutionary ladder that humans are so plagued by illnesses and psychological problems? Shouldn’t we have evolved to handle our lifestyle? Didn’t we climb out of the trees to a better life?

Evolution has no answers to disease, but the Bible has. God created mankind to be healthy. The lifestyle that corresponds to health is described in the Bible. If it is not followed, it can be compared to an electrical circuit: if a higher current is used than prescribed, the fuse will blow, otherwise the whole system will be damaged. God made man exactly like that. For example, he was not created to worry and fret. A stress current is too high for his delicate hormonal balance and his health fuse will blow.

A lifestyle filled with fear, anxiety and stress is prohibited in the Bible. Jesus said: ‘Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest’ (Matt 11: 29). If a man is full of worry and stress he becomes ill. Fibromyalgia is such a disease. It consists of pain in fibrous tissues, muscles, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissue. The Merck Manual, p 1369 - 1370 says concerning it: “The condition occurs mainly in females... Primary fibromyalgia syndrome (PFS) is particularly likely to occur in healthy young women who tend to be stressed, tense, depressed, anxious and striving...”. (Quoted by H Wright, A More Excellent Way, Pleasant Valley Publications, 1999, p 87).

“Hormonal reaction to stress is tied to disease, researchers say. Stress and depression that send emergency hormones flowing into the bloodstream may help cause brittle bones in women, infections, and even cancer, researcher say’. (Dallas Morning News, November 16, 1996, from an article on Health and Science, quoted by H Wright, ibid, p 134). The root cause of many diseases, like allergies, sinus, hay fever, high blood pressure, reflux and others, are tied to fear.

God tells us in the Bible not to fear but to trust in him. Good advice is found in Proverbs 17:22, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones”. Most people are ignorant of, or reject Biblical advice and depend on medicines. But often their diseases are not cured. The right medicine for illness caused by fear, stress and anxiety, is found in the Bible: “ There is no fear in love. Perfect love (the love of God in Jesus Christ who died for man’s sin) drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment (the punishment for our sin was taken by Jesus). The one who fears is not made perfect in love” - 1 John 4:18.

Solutions that negate the spiritual root of disease only attempt to manage the condition and most medicines have side effects. But for those who have discovered God’s medicine chest, for example, the lifestyle of faith instead of fear, that He prescribes, have found that it works. Obedience to God’s Word brings health to many diseased people (recorded in Be In Health, by Henry W. Wright).

The fact that disobedience to the Bible causes disease, is another reason to doubt if humans are just evolved apes. Man has a delicate spiritual balance built into him by his creator, God and if this is violated by negating God’s instructions, his health fuse blows. His health is regained as he returns to the way of life prescribed by his creator.
